Hiya everyone, I hope you are all well and feeling better than our current climate!! Apologies, on behalf of Marc Bridge-Wikinson who had commitments placed on his availability by Liverpool Academy. And rightly so, as guest coaches club requirements always take priority.

Our next guest coach has also had to cancel in order to attend an ‘in house cpd event’ for Barnsley Academy Coaches. Nonetheless an old friend has kindly agreed to deliver a coaching workshop for us – and definitely not his first appearance on behalf of our association. This gent was born in Rotherham but played for New Zealand. During his period of living in New Zealand he was top goal scorer for the New Zealand National League. He also scored 10 goals in 15 games during their 1986 World Cup qualifying campaign, for New Zealand’s All Whites. On returning to ‘blighty’ he played league football for Barnsley, Doncaster Rovers, Cambridge Utd, Sheffield Wednesday, Darlington and Torquay Utd. During the 1970’s there was a documentary programme about him being the most wanted junior footballer in Britain, including the mighty Manchester United, where George Best once was his taxi driver!! He is legendary amongst the coaching fraternity, and he is now Head Of Academy Coaching at Grimsby Town’s Academy. He also works with the ‘boss’ at Grimsby Town – Ian Holloway. Enough, Bob……..I am privileged to introduce Colin Walker as our next guest coach: 24/2/2020.

Colin is delivering a session on ‘transition’ (sometimes called counter attacking). It will be bespoke for the majority of the session, demonstrating practices well suited for Grass Roots Coaches. Transition: Key Objectives – Recognising opportunities to counter attack, winning the ball back to counter attack, counter attacking quickly, where and when to move when possession changes, awareness, passing etc. Singular pressing (closest to the ball) allows opposition to bypass the pressure. However pressing in numbers can often force the opposition to make mistakes. Transition is perhaps one of the most crucial game concepts and matches can be won or lost based on a teams ability to alternate between attacking and defending.

When: Monday 24th February 2020 – 7pm kick off.

Who: Colin Walker – Head Of Academy Coaching @ Grimsby Town

Where: Sheffield Utd Academy Facility, Firshill Crescent, Shirecliffe, Sheffield S4 7DR
