The League has received the following email from a referee:

"

Hi

I was going to email this across on Sunday night but I’ve been too busy with work that I haven’t been able to find the time.

Last Sunday I was refereed a game between Hoyland Town Magpies and Dinnington under 12s in the H division.

I’ve refereed them a few times this year and every time they always lose but never complain and always enjoy playing football. That’s probably why I enjoy refereeing them, knowing that the kids are enjoying themselves and  that it’s not always about winning week in week out.

Don’t get me wrong it’s nice to win but unfortunately we can’t all be winners.

What happened on Sunday total surprised me and gave me the upmost respect to Steven wright who I believe is the manager of Hoyland Town juniors under 12s. I’ve been refereeing a few years now and I’ve seen the odd token gesture but to do what Steven did was honourable and in keeping of the game.

Basically the away team appeared to be struggled to field a starting line-up of 9 players, Steve actually had the luxury of been able to field a full team including subs.

After about 10 minutes into the game Dinninigton were down to 8 men and the score was 0-0.

I noticed that Steven without any explanation immediately took one of his own players off thus it was back to been two equal sides, Half time I questioned him on his decision as to why he had done this, as I hadn’t re-called any other opposition team reducing their numbers especially when they had been winning against Hoyland by numerous goals.

His response was magical “ it’s not about winning it’s about having fun and the kids enjoying themselves, and if we do win then we’ve won fairly”.

As it turned out they did win and win fairly they did, I hope when it comes to the end of season awards that it’s not always about winning and guys like Steven get some recognition .

Well done Steven you’re a credit to the game and I thank you for putting the fun back into football.

Regards

Mel Wallace"
